Jacob Zuma has resigned as president of South Africa.
The scandal-tainted leader made the announcement in a televised address to the nation.
Mr Zuma said he had resigned despite his disagreement with the instruction of the ruling African National Congress party to leave office immediately.
The ANC had been prepared to pursue a vote of no confidence in parliament on Thursday.
The president had been discredited by corruption scandals but had been clinging onto power.
He is expected to be replaced by his current deputy Cyril Ramaphosa.

  Veteran actor, screenwriter, producer and comedian Femi Jarrett passes away on  03/07/26. Femi Jarrett popularly known as Alagbin on Adios family during the 70s was born 16 Feburary 1949 in Calabar, Cross river state Nigeria. Femi Jarrett was a descent of the  Jibolu Taiwo family of Egbaland in Abeokuta, Ogun state. Femi Jarrett was married to the late Clara Jarrett (Nee Kuboye)  In 1975 Femi Jarrett started his acting career on NTA soap opera show village headmaster, Adio Family, Cock crow at dawn, for better for worse and Odo wura. Femi Jarrett will be remembered for being a legendary actor and father to his only child Tolu Jarrett who is based in the UK.
