Georgia’s Tochinoshin won his first Emperor’s Cup with a day in hand on Saturday at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament after defeating Shohozan to improve to 13-1 at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan.
Tochinoshin, a No. 3 maegashira, became the first rank-and-file makuuchi wrestler to win the top-division title since Kyokutenho did so in 2012.
